Everyone has been on a diet. Everyone has failed on a diet!
Diets dont work.
Well infact everyone in the world is on a diet because diet simply means what we eat.... whether its two apples a day or deep fried mac and cheese balls or a bit of both!
The only way to maintain and stick to a healthy balanced diet everyday is to make simple changes to your everyday life. These should not impact negatively on your busy, hard, hectic, stressful life, but enhance it! Below are some ideas and tips to help ensure you are doing the best for your body and mind!
Eat seasonal fruit and veggies!
Foods in season contain the nutrients, minerals and trace elements that our bodies need at particular times of year. For example, British Food Fortnight marks the shift from summer to winter and the fruit and vegetables that are coming into season then, such as butternut squash and apples, are packed with vitamin C to boost our resistance to winter colds.
With calls for us to eat at least five portions a day, fruit and vegetables are taking a more prominent role in menu planning. Think about pairing fruits and vegetables with produce that are grown or reared in the same locality e.g. watercress from the rivers of Hampshire or apples from the orchard-filled fields of Gloucestershire.
Add a wildcard to your shopping trolley! Every time I visit a new farmers market or fruit shop, I look around for a fruit or vegetable I've never tried before. I love being excited by whole foods and eating outside of the box. How do you know that your favourite fruit is strawberries if you've never tried a sugar pear or mangosteen?
Make a healthy version of your fave 'not so healthy' meal! I LOVE brownies, pizza, nachos and creamy pasta! I can confirm that I have successfully mastered the healthy version to all of these meals! Whether you're winging it in the kitchen like me, or following a recipe on google, just remember... you can make a healthy version of EVERYTHING!
Get your friends and family on the band wagon! Now unfortunately this often means sharing your delicious, healthy creations, or your expensive box of organic, activated granola with the fam, but hear me out ...... it'll be worth it in the end! Having people surrounding you who not only support your healthy eating, but take part in it with you is literally the dream! Surround yourself with people who support you and bring out the best version of you!
Recently my mam and dad organised a birthday surprise for me and the whole buffet was either homemade whole food or pulp fiction goodies and I loved sharing it all with my nearest and dearest! ❤️
Be prepared and organised! Now I don't mean meal prepping every meal and being so organised you have the next three days meals made. I just mean stock your cupboard and fridge full of healthy ingredients and snacks! I know if I'm ever craving cake or sweets and I open the cuboard to see my healthy flapjacks, peanut butter fudge or honey roasted chickpeas (recipe to follow) I'll immediately crave that... instead of dairymilk! Fill up on fruit, vegetables, nuts and other whole food snacks so you simply won't even have room for the not so healthy options!
Research, learn, discover and explore. Theres nothing more motivating to me than an afternoon spent reading health and nutrition research articles and case studies! After learning more about the impact food has on our bodies, I seem to have a renewed sense of determination, motivation and love for whole foods. Never stop learning, educating and rewarding yourself with health and feel good food!
Yes sometimes all you want is dairymilk and a pack biscuits and that in moderation is ok. Just make sure you are aware of how it will make you feel and how your body will respond! You will soon start wanting them honey roasted chickpeas and carrot and black bean rostis after a long hard day!
