You are what you eat
MThe Month of december is all about go go go... shopping, meeting friends and family, doing seasonal activities such as ice skating, pantomimes, ferrying kids to christmas parties, picking teenagers up at all hours from xmas parties, cooking, cleaning, decorating ....need i go on? thought not. Here is the first of my recipe ideas that are tried and tested out in the cafe. Thought i would keep it simple with a raw no cook recipe that you can make at home with the kids or knock up in the morning for your busy day ahead. We make and sell power balls from pulp fiction and they are so simple...but if you like the sound and have no inclination to make yourself dont worry as they can be bought from us every day or why not pop over to our Made to Order Page and order a whole batch made fresh just for you.
Power balls are a perfect go to snack for those on the run, packed wit loads of energy using a base of Medjool dates and nuts then you can just add what you want, thought i would give you the run down on my christmas power balls being that time of year.
1 500g box medjool dates pitted
1 cup almonds or any other nut you have in your store cupboard
1 cup cranberries
Pinch ground clove
Pinch Ground Ginger
Grate 1/4 of a whole nutmeg
1 tsp cinnamon
grated rind of 1 orange
1 tsp vanilla Bean Paste
1/4 cup maple syrup
Something to roll in...coconut, chia seeds, poppyseeds, raw cacao or acaiberry powder.
Place the nuts in a processor and pulse for a minute then add everything else except the syrup and turn on processor then when it starts to get mixed drizzle in the maple until the nmixture starts to ball together, you may not need all the maple it all depends on how seet you eant them and how moist your dates are. When done remove from bowl and roll into balls that weight around 35g each and roll in your desired coating.
You will get aroun d 15 balls out of the mixture. why not bag them up and tie a ribbon around anf give as nice little i
gifts at xmas...easy for children to make with no bake but maximum satisfaction.
I love nothing than giving every little thing a purpose so i also add into my balls the nut pulp that i have left over from making my nut milks...waste not want not as my Mam used to say. If you dont make nut milk then keep tuning in as shall show you how to make it very soon x

I am sitting in my little cafe now on a Saturday with not a soul in...on a SATURDAY and it is small business Saturday at that, people are out and about on the street laden down with bags of shopping with gifts galore for family friends buying outfits for nights out. Not our quietest Saturday as looking back over the books we took half of what we have taken today this time last year ...but it does make you feel a little deflated non the less. Luckily i am not a crazy spender at christmas buying sensibly for my nearest and dearest, i shop within my limits to ensure i dont have hefty bills coming in.. and with quite days like this you worry about paying staff, electric bills so worrying about what i am going to buy at xmas is defo a no no for me. My mind often wanders at this time of year thinking about those whom will be alone or homeless, people with no work and finding it hard to even put food on the table never mind buying gifts so on the other hand i do feel very lucky indeed...even though i do get paid way less than the minimum wage. December is a troubling time for many out there so dont forget to look after you with simple things like diet and wellbeing, instead of buying 3 for one at boots or buying into all those deals on things that people dont even need in their life why not pick up vouchers for holistic treatments for your loved ones or a block booking of yoga sessions or even encourage those that are always talking about sorting their diet out to a health on a Plate course... which Julia Ebbens Health Coach shall be running very shortly from Pulp Fiction (details will be reveiled soon). We also sell gift vouchers to come and dine in our cafe and we also run our very own Pulp Fiction Pharmacy that you could book friends onto as a special gift... a gift of giving.
A lot of local holistic centres... i recommend Cloud 9 in cullercoats... have a range of life enhancing gifts for sale too... crystals, salt lamps, natural homemade beauty products and candles. So not only will you be supporting local but you will also be giving a useful gift which believe me when the real stresses and strains hit in January when bills come in, when the big clean down comes and you get time to stop and actually think about what the whole thing has all been about that is when a gift meant for you...truely just for you to indulge your mind body and soul will be very much appreciated. So i guess what i am trying to say is take time out for you and if you cant do that then give gifts that enhance the wellbeing of others...hoping they get the hint and return that favour next year.

No by healthy advent i dont mean that we will be opening little doors to reveal a healthy food item and fact about said item.....instead we will be opening our door to you and inviting you try one of our healthy options for half price every day...be it a salad, curry, clean treat or a life enhancing hot or cold drink from or very tasty menu.
December is of course a time for most to celebrate and most over indulge with the excuse that "its christmas" forgetting that our bodies are not used to consuming all that alchohol, rich food and of course chocolate so get overloaded and become ill. So this month we are going to promote healthy eating now rather than in January when it is too late.
The season to be jolly soon turns sour when you have that banging headache after your works night out so why not prepare beforehand and make sure that you dont go out on an empty stomach, try drinking water alongside your wine while drinking and dont forget that your body takes 1 hour to process 1 unit of alcohol so if you are at work the next day set yourself a time limit have your last drink so that the process can begin before you go to bed... you may just be thankful in the morning. Start the day with a Pulp Fiction Juice... we open at 8.30am so perfect time to call in en route to work and grab one of our Soothers which is a slow pressed juice with... grapefruit to restore your electrolite balance to stop you becoming dehydrated and replenishes lost vitamins caused by drinking alcohol, Red cabbage...listen to the ancient greeks as they were the first to do this, cabbage clears the body of congeners (my memories as a cocktail bar manager are coming flooding back) which are toxic by products of the fermentaion process which give us a hangover in the first place so red cabbage is always a good place to start, Red apple helps with your blood sugar levels which drop drastically after alcohol consumption and parsnips which have many benefits including helping to aid gut health and lets face it all that alcohol and rich food cant be doing your gut that much good now can it. When they are all juiced together it makes a perfect hangover cure... so lets start the season as we mean to go on... Eat well...live life to the max and be happy.
